A lot of books by Indian authors, for some reason.
It all started a long time ago when I discovered Jhumpa Lahiri. I've read everything she's written and can't wait for her next offering.
A few weeks ago, I picked up 2 books at the library that looked good- and both happened to be by Indian authors.
Arranged Marriage is a great collection of short stories set both in India and the U.S.
Bombay Time is a wonderful novel about the residents of a Bombay apartment complex, most of whom are attending a wedding. The book goes back and forth between the different residents' backstories and what's happening at the wedding. I loved it.
Last week at the library, I chose a few books to read over Shabbat- and again, both were by Indian authors! What are the odds? I didn't plan this, they were just there.
Home is a fascinating story about an Indian family in Delhi who run a clothing business.
Fasting, Feasting is another look at an Indian family, contrasting that world with that of the son who goes to the US for college.
I really enjoyed all of these books, and I'm going to look for more to read by the 4 authors. Reading about this other world about which I knew very little was fascinating- though I must say, I'd make a terrible traditional Indian wife. Having to live with my in-laws, never any privacy...I don't think- no, I KNOW I couldn't take it.

I didn't know you were back to blogging. I am GLAD!
Thanks for the suggestions; good books are always welcome.
My two favorite Indian authors are Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni (Sister of My Heart and Mistress of Spices) and Rohinton Mistry (A Fine Balance and Family Matters).
I just finished reading Abraham Verghese's Cutting for Stone. Set mainly in Africa, with several Indian characters - it was a fabulous read.

Ilana-Davita: Thanks, I'm trying to get back into blogging. We'll see how it works out!
Lisa: Thanks for the recommendations- I've heard of Mistry, and the movie version of Mistress of Spices was on TV several months ago. I'll have to look for those books.
